From the Tennessee
Transgender Political Coalition headquarters in Nashville
This past Wednesday, the Senate Education Committee passed SB2162 by
Senator Charlotte Burks (D-Monterey) has which allows directed parental
and guardian involvement with children in school activities such as
chaperoning field trips, fundraising events and working with after school
clubs. The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition supports SB2162 and
encourages the full Senate to adopt this bill.
In the same meeting, SB1133 by Dwayne Bunch (R-Cleveland), which requires
parental consent for students to participate in clubs, was deferred one
week until April 18. This is the same bill as HB0905 by Rep. Matthew Hill
(R-Jonesborough) in the House.
We ask you to contact members of the Senate Education Committee and
encourage them to oppose SB1133 by Senator Bunch, which has too many
unintended consequences. A clear example would be a child having his or
her only outlet for camaraderie stifled by disinterested parents failing
to sign a document--no matter what club the child may chose to join..
