Bleach bombs planted at West Knox News

Coincides with anniversary date of Town and Country fire

From staff reports

Two bleach bombs were set on the West Knox News parking lot, located at 5011 Kingston Pike, this weekend. The reason behind the placement of the bombs is uncertain, however speculation surrounds the fact that this week marks the one-year anniversary of the arson-related fire at the business’ sister store, Town and Country Adult Book Den, located on Clinton Highway.

A bleach bomb is made of bleach and aluminum foil placed in a glass bottle. The bleach reacts with the aluminum causing heat and expansion. The pressure inside the bottle causes it to explode creating the possibility of physical injury and damage to all painted items or surfaces including cars and clothing that come in contact with the bleach thrown off by the device

According to reports from other communities, exploding a bleach bomb may carry criminal charges included but not limited to manufacturing, possession, and detonation of explosive devices; terrorism; arson; aggravated assault; criminal mischief; and others.

Town and Country Adult Book Den reopened for business on Monday, July 3, 2006. The newly remodeled store was stocked with totally new merchandise, according to Timothy Douglas, store manager.

The Northwest Knoxville bookstore, located at 7011 Clinton Hwy., was destroyed by fire on January 31, 2006, when Benjamin Daniel Warren, 20, of Powell, admittedly set fire to the business believing that he was instructed by God to burn down the adult bookstore. At that time, Warren was, a student at Crown College, an independent Baptist institution offering only Bible-related degrees. He later turned himself in after an automobile accident convinced him that he had not acted in God’s will.
