TTPC Urges All Tennesseans to Meet with Members of Congress During August Recess

From President Marisa Richmond at TTPC Nashville headquarters

The Congress of the United States will be in recess later this summer. The Congressional Recess begins August 6 and runs through September 3. The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition urges all Tennesseans to meet with Senators and Representatives in the home office closest to you to discuss two bills of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.

In meeting with Senators, we encourage you to ask them to support the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act (S.1105). Many of you have previously written to Senators Alexander and Corker urging them to vote "yes.” We had hoped for a vote on this bill in mid July, but the vote did not take place. We are now expecting a vote in the Senate later this year. We now ask you to meet with them or their staff next month and continue explaining why this vital piece of legislation is so important to protect GLBT (sic) Tennesseans who are victims of hate crimes.

To make an appointment, call:

Lamar Alexander (R) Blountville, 423-325-6240
Chattanooga, 423-752-5337
Jackson, 731-423-9344

Knoxville, 865-637-4180
Memphis, 901-683-1910
Nashville, 615-352-9411

The United States House of Representatives is expected to vote on the Employment Non Discrimination Act, or ENDA (HR2015), later this year. This bill will make it illegal to discriminate in hiring and employment on the basis of either sexual orientation or gender identity. The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition strongly supports HR2015 and urges passage. At the present time, one Tennessean, Stephen Cohen (D-Memphis) is a co-sponsor of this legislation.
