The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS - March 4-19, 2007

From the Balm of Gilead Web site:

The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is a powerfuThe Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDSl week of prayer, education, and action. This national AIDS awareness campaign engages Black congregations to support, encourage and empower African Americans, Africans and all people of the Diaspora to take action toward stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS in Black communities worldwide.

HIV/AIDS continues to spread out of control in our community! African American women are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. As such, HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among African American women ages 25 to 34.The rate of AIDS cases for African American women is 25 times higher than the rate for white women.

Of the estimated new AIDS cases, 61% are among African American teen girls ages 13 – 19. African American Gay men continue to be at high risk for infection, accounting for an estimated 57% of AIDS diagnoses among men.*

Over the past year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a serious outbreak on many historical Black college campuses. After almost 25 years of fighting AIDS unsuccessfully in Black communities, time is certainly running out on us!

Fabulous Female Filmmakers coming to the World Grotto

KnoxvilleFilms.com will be showcasing Fabulous Female Filmmakers every Tuesday during the month of March by showcasing great movies made by female filmmakers like Sofia Coppola and Niki Caro. The event will happen every Tuesday evening in March at 7pm at The World Grotto on Market Square. This event is a collaboration between KnoxvilleFilms.com, the Knoxville African American Film Festival, WBIR, WUTK, Metro Pulse, the Disc Exchange, and the East Tennessee Television & Film Commission.

Susie Dew, the owner of The World Grotto states, "we're proud to be the home to such a happening event and a great celebration of female filmmakers".

"It's a wonderful chance to see some great films by women, drink a martini and enjoy the company of other artists" says KnoxvilleFilms.com co-founder Molly Davis. "We're blown away by the tremendous success of the event and look forward to sharing great movies with more people than ever". The films will be shown as part of the World Grotto's weekly Cinematini Tuesday independent film series which features great independent films and $3 martinis and margaritas from 6-10pm.

Cinematini Tuesday happens every Tuesday at 7pm. Screenings from Knoxville artists and filmmakers begin at 8pm and the feature films start at 8:30pm. Admission is free but $3 donations to KnoxvilleFilms.com are graciously accepted. The Grotto is located at 16 Market Place, downtown Knoxville.

Cinematini Tuesday will close out the Fabulous Female Filmmakers series on the last Tuesday of the month with a fundraiser for the Damon and Stella Mental Health Foundation featuring Niki Caro's film "Whale Rider", and live music by Brandy Robinson, Leslie Woods, and the Red Cloud. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Damon and Stella Mental Health Foundation, co-founded by local filmmaker Dario Gildrie after the suicide of his wife Stella Barret in 2006. "We're honored that Knoxville Films is working to help us raise money. "With over 700,000 yearly attempts and some 35,000 completions, suicide is too often the silent result of a disease in need of a cure."
